Default Fuel additives?

Specifically injector cleaners. What's the opinion?
I have a '90 964 that has died twice in the last few weeks, both times after about a 75mph run for 20 min, then having to stop in Fwy traffic. Not an abrupt stop, but a nice easy down shift from 5th, 4th then 3rd and then a dead stop. The idle often dips but twice it didn't kick back up and just died. I'll restart with no problem. It had a major servicing about 2k miles ago from a reputable indi.

Not sure if it will clear up your problem but my mechanic suggested using Techron fuel cleaner before I do the oil change. Not sure if it makes a difference or not but I do what he tells me to do..

The only product I have used is Techron from Chevron (no affiliation). 1 bottle to 10 gallons of gas once a year in both my cars, seems to run better after a treatment.

Hi,

I'm a big fan of injector cleaners (Lubro-Moly, Techron) but this doesn't sound like a dirty injector issue to me.

This sounds like a possible fuel supply problem such as an obstructed fuel filter, bad DME relay, or even a failing fuel pump.

You didn't say how many miles are on your car not any details about what was done during the recent service and these are both important pieces of information,....

I also go with Techron on a regular basis. It is highly recommended for the 993's to lessen the SAI problem that they experience.

I go to the Chevron station when convenient and get the Techron that way. I have not yet had any FI problems. I know most major auto makers use Chevron when they perform the Federally-mandated 50,000-mile emissions durability test. Enough said.

Good info. I'll try.
As far as milage, I think it's about 130K. The major servicing was the 10k tune up, whatever is done during that. There isn't any other problems as far as making it go and go smoothly, only what I mentioned which has happened twice in about 3 weeks. Usually, when I come to a stop, the idle does dip but always comes back. Don't know if it makes a dif but the gas could have been low in the tank both times it happen.
I'll try some techron.

Not sure if you can get hold of it in the US but Forte Gas Treatments (google or check out ebay) did wonders for one of my daily runners when one of our local garages had a batch of bad fuel. Engine ran a lot sweeter than ever and have since used it in both the Turbo 3.6 and the 968.

This sounds more like a idle control valve issue - How long has it been since you cleaned yours ?/

Me too, and the idle is fine. If the air filter is kept in good shape, and oil is not over-filled, the ISV will work for a long time (18 years and counting in my case). My former 1986 300E has a similar ISV, and it is still original and still idling OK (I am still friends with the new owner, thankfully).

This is exactly what fixed mine, it was gummed up, ended up having to be replaced. By the way, not sure how easy it is to get at the injectors with the engine in the car, but worth it to send them out to be cleaned and flow tested for under $150. Just had mine done while the engine is out and they found one that was dripping instead of spraying! (80k miles)
