I don't need and don't want that, and only need the a/c, so the mechanic simply disconnected the relevant resistor (or so he says) for the heater fan.

Gang,
For the last few months I had a god-awful rattle coming from the undercarriage. After repeated examinations finding nothing I finally located the problem - a bracket attaching a thin metal shield to the secondary muffler had cracked and the broken arm on the bracket was rattling against the metal shield at 2000 rpm.
Getting the bolts off was a bear given poor access down there. Took me an hour. Now that the shield is off (and the rattle gone) I am wondering whether I can leave the shield off from now on. All that remains between the secondary muffler and the left bank valve cover/plug wires is that tin-foil covered material. Is that sufficient? Can I go without the shield down there or do I risk heat damage from the muffler to that material and possibly to the valve covers?
Thanks all.
