Brake Job Help
 

Hey guys. I’m hosting a Tech Session for our local PCA area in a couple weeks. We’re tackling a brake job on a 964 Targa; rotors, pads, fluid, and lines. I believe the owner purchased a kit from Pelican.

Anyhow, between myself and friends, we have experience with doing brake jobs on the 996 platform, as well as recently a 87 911.

We’ll have a lift, Motive bleeder, full assortment of Allen/hex tools, Torx, ratchets, sockets, etc.

Having said that, I’m asking for any advice, tips, tricks, and / or any special tools required? DIY write ups or links?

Watch out for the bottom allen head bolt on the rear calipers. You will need one a long one that can be attached to a breaker bar/torque wrench. Make sure you use penetrating oil before starting.

Oh, might want to bleed the clutch while you are there.

Congrats on your newly acquired GT3. I live in Chapel Hill and attended a Wake Zone coffee run once so I follow the thread on the 996 forum. Very nice guys.

dont take the calipers off. You dont need to when you change pads and fluids. As said before that back allen bolt can cause a lot of trouble.

We have PB Blaster, breaker bars, and plenty of expletives. :D

Good info, however we’re pulling rotors too.

So far, it sounds like we’ll have everything we’ll need. I’ll try to take a bunch of pictures and give back to the forum. :cheers:

Release the emergency brake before pulling rotors off!!

Anyone know what the torque values are for the caliper bolts?

This is the allen tool I cut to take the bolts off the caliper. The long one goest hru the hole on the rears. It took a breaker bar to break mine lose.

Thanks for the offer, unfortunately I'll still be out of town at that time. Give me a heads up on the next one. You guys have a great group at Wake Zone, I hope to make a coffee run in the next couple of weeks...want to hear the exhaust set up on your GT3!

Do you need an extra can of ATE blue just in case it is needed?

I think I have an unopened one in my garage.
