Well, my average running costs are about $5K / year after 10 years. But that's due to 2 complete rebuilds, and turning it into a track car.
There are great examples, and many clubs that will help you out with the repairs.
Remember the consumables, tires, brakes, clutches, oil changes, etc. They add up, and I wouldn't budget under $1K/year for maintenance.

I agree avg probably 1k a year one part and then oil etc. maybe even 1500 dollars, but your 5k a year is self inflicted lol or did you tell the wife is was needed maint lol.
regardless these cars are amazing they run all day high rpms and just ask for more.

Completely agreed with earlier comments...find a good one, get a ppi, and it will save you $'s in the long run. I have owned four 911's and just went back to a 964 C4 after being porsche-less for a couple of years. Ihad to look for about 6 months to find one acceptable to me -- didn't like the color but the condition was good. While the running/maintenance costs are very high -- highest of the 911's I have owned since they require valve adjustments, have two dist caps/rotors, I live in the sf bay area which has ridiculously high porsche labor rates (it runs about $1500-2000 for a 15K mile service), etc., I still think it is worth it. I only drive about 5K miles a year though so on average I would say that I have spent about $1-2K a year on the two 964's that I have owned (I expect it to go up now that they are older and will need more repairs). The build quality of the 964's just seems to be a tad better then the other 911's I have owned and the combination of the classic looks with more modern suspension, a/c, etc. is the perfect match in my opinion. Good luck with your search!

I have owned a 1980 911SC, 1993 964 RS America, 1996 993 C4S...and now a 1990 964 C4. They are all amazing cars...I personally just found the two 964's that I have owned to be slightly better in build quality. Hard to put an exact finger on it, but just feels slightly more solid and been slightly more reliable as I have had less small, nitpicking repairs with the 964s.
