Default Oil pressure gauge fault

Evening all,

The needle on my 964 C2 oil pressure gauge reads max when the ignition is switched on and stays in the same position once the engine is started.

Should I be looking at the gauge or the sender unit?

I have read the old threads on oil pressure gauge problems but I don't think any were this particular problem.

Many thanks,
Bryn.

Gauges very rarely show maximum deflection when they fail, whereas senders usually do. My money would be on the sender.

Regards

Dave

How long has this happened? Is this a recent behavior? Has any engine work been done? My C2 coupe had this behavior, the fault was the previous owner's mechanic had hooked up the oil pressure sender backwards. There are two electrical connections, one for the idiot light and the other for the pressure gauge. He had them reversed. I swapped them while repairing some other things, the gauge has been working properly for the past 2 years.

I just had this on mine as well. It turned out to be the sender.
