Default Water in trunk area

After driving in heavy rain I found water in the empty slot beside the fuel tank. Question is of course where the water enters, and if there is a way of preventing it.

My second question is about the holes located under the spare tire, is this standard having them open this way? Seems pretty risky especially winter time.

Flash from Sverige.

I can only answer your question about the holes under the spare wheel. There is supposed to be a rubber plug in each of those holes, it is a plug with a groove in it so water can drain in case any gets in there.

Part number 911.631.259.02 and you need 5, IIRC.

flash_malmö,
Just curious, do you have any rust bubbles at the driver's side bottom corner of the windshield?

everyone,
Could water leak through the windshield gasket, go through the small rust holes and also allow water to drain down into the same area?
I don't doubt the real culprit is the Bonnet seal, but would a rusted windshield area also contribute?
Or would it most likely drain into the wheel well area instead of the trunk?
