I am willing to bet that someone duct-taped the heater hose back together at some point.

Yes. Or something not up to the job.
Here's
a replacement that works. 3"-dia, I believe.

I just replaced mine with the metal dryer vent pipe, and used hose clamps to attach it. PITA to get on, but works like a charm.

well if it is 3" diameter I got some of that aircraft-spruce ducting in the garage!

Yeah, looks like duct tape.
I used the 3 inch aircraft-spruce stuff after my reseal, has worked wonderfully!!

the old piece of flex ducting had black duct tape at the bottom...

Use the aircraft SCEET tubing in the Link. It is about $10 a ft, is heat resistant, and works perfectly. It was used in my aircraft engine compartment and lasts for many many years.

luckily I had that exact ducting in my garage from my previous car.
