Default Potential 964 Owner

Hello,
I may become a first time Poosche owner, I have been a Porsche enthisiast since I have been a child and finally have to chance to own one. I have been thinking about purchasing a 1992-1994 964 C2 because as far as I have read it is a fairly reliable model. I would be looking for one with 55,000 and under miles on it.

I wanted to get your guys take on the reliability of these cars and the things to look out for when purchasing one. I am mechanic by hobby and am quite handy, that being said I do not want a car that would break down on me on a regular basis. I would do fairly simple mods to the car such as coilovers, sways and maybe headers and exhaust but I mainly want an enjoyable drivers car. I am also choosing the 92-94 model year because I read the earlier 964's have had head leakage issues. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there Steven - you don't need to think about it, JUST DO IT. They are usually VERY reliable cars, I use mine as a daily driver to and from work etc. BUT, they come much more alive out on the open road. If the road is smooth and the weather is fine it's just brilliant! I bought mine four and a half years ago and I still enjoy driving it. Mine is a C4 as I like 4wheel drive cars. Before looking try and get hold of a copy of The Ultimate Guide to Bying a Porsche 964 by Phil Raby, which explains a lot about the model. Also if you see a likely car, get someone to do a pre-purchase inspection, maybe and independant garage that specialises in servicing / repairing Porsches, not cheap but worth it. Best of luck in your search for a car. I'm not sure where you are from as not shown in your details, maybe UK?

you will very likely not be disappointed with a 964 purchase, as they are delightful to drive, well constructed-tight & solid.
finding one with less than 55,000mi. might be a bit of a challenge (particularly in a coupe/manual trans), but mileage may be less of an issue than quality of maintenance by previous owners, and results of the p.p.i. (in particular leakdown results).
you are correct the later yrs of the 964 series did have enhancements to heads & if i am not mistaken an improved clutch....however many owners here are running earlier models without issues.

good luck

Hey guys thank you very much for the replies! I will be sure to pick up the said book as soon as possible. I am actually from America, out of New York. Yes I also read that they do have an improved clutch i believe at the end of the 92 model year. I do have the Porsche 911 Buyers Guide by Leffingwell that is currently where I have gooten most of my info from.

I am starting to see that most of the 964 do have higher milage but I will do my best to find the right one for me as I am in no rush. I really apprecitae the replies and hope to enjoy a 964 in the near future!

.....just to mention - & apologies if you were already aware (as i found when i was looking last yr) while the bodies were dipped/galvanized the 964's can be subject to rust (less an issue for garage queens or out of the sunbelt obviously) - particularly at base of windshield in the corners (water tends to collect under the rubber surround)....can be an expensive fix.
so examine carefully that area for any bubbles, doors sills, under the trunk carpet in all the corners...have the p.p.i. guy also have a good poke around when its on the hoist.
good luck

Hello I cannot seem to locate the book suggested above. Does anyone happen to own this book?

http://www.amazon.com/Porsche-911-Ca.../dp/0954999045

And is it recommended? Thank you.

+964 - The cars are very reliable. Note the mileage on my C4 cab.

I would suggest a couple books.

And if you buy one and work on it yourself, I find this very handy.

Of course, a membership in Rennlist is a great idea too.

No affiliations.
