This is quite funny :-) To pass the UK driving test hill starts are one of the things we have to do (along with parallel parking, reversing around corners etc), so I guess it comes naturally to most of us over here - especially with the overwhelming majority of cars on the roads being manual.

on a really steep hill, the handbrake is the best technique. Hold the button in, pull up the lever and let her out at the same time the clutch is grabbing. Do it 2-3 times and you'll be a pro!

We have a really steep turn after a stop sign on one of the streets in town and I just taught my wife to do the left foot on the brake and ease out when revs get up a little for starting with her automatic transmission Buick enclave, as even with an auto some really steep hills can allow the car to roll back (to respond to that guy with the tip )
