Default Engine oil question with a twist.

So, over here the temperature is 28-30 degree celcius at night and 34-36 in the day. (86-97 F)

I've been using Mobil 1's 5W-50 for the past year but I met someone who works on Porsche's a lot said I should switch to Shell Helix's 5W-40 because it's "thicker". He said the Mobil 1 oils are too thin for this climate.

Any advice on what oil I should be using?

The 5W-50W should be MORE viscose at operating temp than a 5W-40 unless I am missing something. Weight tells the viscosity not manufacturer.

Yeah that's what I thought, but he claims the Shell is better for this temp at 5W-40..... I'm confused.
