Interesting reading this now, sounds like the original poster was on to something.
I strongly agree that most cheap examples now easily need 10k to sort them..and subsequently cannot really be enjoyed until sorted. If you buy a cheap car with the intention to spend on bringing it up to date then you are on the right track otherwise you may never really "unlock" what is fun about these old cars and be stuck with an underwelming experience.
I always liked the phrase: Was it the word OLD or PORSCHE that made you think it would be cheap?!

We all know the 964 story.
Lets talk the C2 Manual Cars, in 1991 they made 801 units then minus the Tiptronic
Very low volume in the 964 years.
In 1989 a half year it was all 4wd
Then 90, 91, 92, 93, 94 were low volume
see Porsche had other problems at the mainly the 928, 968, 944
trying to pursue people to buy front engine
the 993 was king but the 964 of the air cooled era is superior and will go beynd 993 C2
