Default 89 Carrera 4 Clutch

Seems I ran into a problem with clutch fitment:

Rebuilding engine and want to install new clutch. No way no how am I going to use the rubber hockey puck. Single mass flywheel, so already relatively light there. Purchased a 1990 Turbo clutch disk (964-116-014-63-M38), but it interferes with the flywheel bolts. Have debated removing the rivets in the disk and moving the center flange to the other side of the friction plate. But I'd rather not. I also purchased a used aluminum 1990 turbo pressure plate, but that won't fit either.

Is there an aluminum pressure plate that will work with this single mass flywheel and the longer bellhousing? If one of these is too cost prohibitive, then I'll use the stock one. Which clutch disk will work? Will this clutch work (996-116-015-32-M38) the RS version?

Thanks,
Rob

Centerforce makes a clutch set up that you might like .

Good idea - thank - but I don't see how the ring gear would attach to the pressure plate on the Centerforce.

They have done the leg work for it all to work .
If you buy their clutch set up , you will have a spring center disc .

And I'm not sure about your ring gear/pressure plate concern .
I think the ring gear stays on the stock 89 flywheel .

Ring gear is located on the pressure plate.

Looks like the thicker dual mass flywheel on the right picture. Mine is the single mass without any ring gear on it. The ring gear is located on the pressure plate on mine, and it looks like a seperate piece.

I had the clutch out on my 89 a few years back , I don't recall seeing the ring gear not on the flywheel .
I wish I had photos .

Got any photos of your clutch set up to share ?

No pics - but thanks for the help. The Centerforce clutch you recommended would have worked - found it on racemart for $900+. But more than I wanted spend right now. Ordered a Vertex clutch disk instead. I did study the clutch disk I bought to try and cut / reweld to make it work. Too much risk though!!!

replaced mine with the vertex disc last year and it works fine.
post 6 in the thread has the weights for the different setups. Note the 89 has the lightest fw (100 g lighter than the LWF!) but the starter ring and the PP are heavier (PP substantially so!)

for a picture of a complete 89 factory setup and a parts list pdf that KirkF put together for all 964 years.

Thanks for all that info. I want to keep the original steel 89 flywheel and the ring gear and starter. So it seemed I was limited in the options. But that original pressure plate (PP) sure is heavy. Sachs must have made an aluminum version of that thick PP, perhaps for 87-89 G50 boxes.

As it stands now, I'm waiting for delivery of the Vertex disk - then it all goes together - after fabricating some stainless boxes around the non-heat headers I bought and stainless connections between those headers and the 993 cat. If it's too loud, there's plenty of room for a couple 2" Borla offset mufflers.
