buying a 964

buying a 964
hi, i'm now hunting for a 964. december may not be the best time, not too many on ebay or autotrader, or craigslist.
am looking at probably a c2 tip, it will be the 'convenient' car to my 1971 911T
am looking for it being stock and reliability. LSD would be a terrific, but doubt there are any with tip, or am i wrong?
the choices out there are higher mileage, these days. i've searched for ppi issues on 964s, but i guess with the age and mileage, expect to need some work. having a 1971 and a different make 1990, i'm used to that.
let me ask this another way, if i were to ppi and buy a 964, what would i look for before driving it across state on a multi-hundred miles journey? is the engine the weak point, or is the tip the weak point?
thanks
ps. anyone know of any dark exterior/tan interior car for sale ? (maybe dark blue or green, or silver, or white exterior)

Hi, I can tell you what have been the most expensive repairs on mine so far (1990 C2 - 150 000 kms).
- Oil leaks fixed (+ clutch and 'while you're at it' rocker-arms/screws, oil lines)
- Air con Evaporator upgraded/changed
- Rust on windscreen base.
Are you sure about the tiptronic and as a 964 as a 'convenient' car?
For that, I got an old w208 CLK320. An wonderful automatic 'box, plenty of cabin space, 4 seats, super-smooth V6. And it really makes the 911 'different' to drive.

thanks for the perspective
it's all about comparisons, i'm sure a big sedan merc is more convenient, but a tip-964 would be more convenient than my 1971 2.2L 911
i walk to work, so both these mobiles will be for 'fun'. wife has a 'convenient' VW.

One day I hope to do what you're doing... own a modern Porsche (964?!) and a longhood (a '73 RGruppe type car).
Hope you find a great car! Keep us posted.

964's are very reliable cars as long as they have been properly maintained. Doing a thorough PPI prior to purchase will give you the facts to make an informed decision.
What will it take to prep a 964 for a cross state trip? It depends on the state of the car. If you buy a well cared for car, not much. I moved from California to NH back in 2005 and drove my cabrio across country. At the time, it had about 190K miles. To prepar the car, I had a 15K service done, made sure I carried oil, fan belts and a spare DME relay. The trip was a lot of fun with no problems.
If you are buying a fixer-upper, then its hard to say. I would avoid one of these.

Assuming it passed the PPI without any significant issues, I'd be comfortable driving a 964 across the country (because I drove mine from Houston to Virginia). Engines are reliable, ditto transmissions. Maintenance records are important. Carry normal spares -- belts, bulbs, DME relay, none of which is expensive and wise to have on hand regardless of trip length -- along with a cellphone and credit card and you should be good to go. If you do this, write a trip report for your Rennlist buddies here.

Make sure you get a good PPI.
I was just about to finish closing the deal on a 964 only to find it was in a bad accident.
If you find one that is not close to you, ask a rennlister to go and look at it for you too.
You will not regret making these two wise decisions.

I bought my '91 tip with LSD, low miles (45k) a few years ago, without a PPI. repairs needed were
1) oil thermostat rebuild
2) flex oil line to oil filter replaced
3) fan on oil cooler shot
500 or 600 dollars for parts.
then there's all the still i replaced because maint history
was lacking. makes a great daily driver for the summer.
and see's several days of DE, not a rock star on the track but holds its own.
best of luck to you

I drove mine from Massachusetts to Alabama. Had a cv boot tear after a big dip in the road on 95 in Connecticut. Slung a little grease, no biggie. Fixed it when I got home. Great trip. I took buddy along who is not a car guy so he would have a good car story. Lol.

call your DMV and ask them. Put you location in your sig and its easier to get answers to questions like this.

Bought a 91 C2 in Denver last week. 58K miles. PPI came through incredibly clean. Leak down had no cylinder lower than 3 percent. Valve guides great. Drove it to back to KC. Worried a bit and then settled into a great ride. Got to know the car and only stopped about six times to admire it.
This is just one experience.
