Its definitely been a all year daily driver. I'm pretty sure the engine tin can't be in great shape. The rust at the lower corner of the windshield is of concern and certainly will have to be addressed soon if not now. I wouldn't be surprised if you picked up the drivers side capet and find it wet or damp. What does the other side of the windshield look like?
It also looks like you have a oil leak coming from the right side of the engine? Possibly from the power steering pump area?
As far as the under carriage compares to others. Its all relative to mileage and climate the car has been driven in. I've seen better. It looks like any typical high mileage Northeastern daily driver.

Most 964s in my part of the country are still free of significant rust. Rust never sleeps, and you would need to attack the problem areas that involve water sealing for the cabin and structural supports for suspension and drivetrain.
There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche. You will be able to find a rust-free car for less cost than buying and fixing that one.

Very well spoken Springer3.....
Repair and or do it right the first time I always say....
To the original post...The car looks fine otherwise......Just a little TLC........only garage queen car's will look flawless underneath and or ones that were not driven in the winter months or in a lot of rain....
Keep in mindthese cars are getting to be 15+ year old cars....
My gut tells me this is a $3-5k effort to bring to a no leak & rust state.
There are better. If you're an obsessive-compulsive - pass.
If not - and this is a $17k car - think of it as adventure in discovery, and go for it!

Is this a NY car? That's a damn shame about an otherwise nice-sounding car. I'm originally from salty Ohio, and I've bought cars long-distance from all over, but the cars I've seen (and bought) from NY state take the prize as Rusting ****'s.
They must pave the streets with salt.
