Default BMW 335 Turbo vs. 964 C2

So my daily driver (BMW 528 sport M/T) is in the shop and my service advisor (my father) hooked me up with a loaded up 335 Turbo to drive for a week while i get my work done. I was very thankful since i thought i would have to drive my C2 everyday, to and from work...The BMW should have kept a smile on my face but I am almost wishing i was forced to drive my p-car. Maybe it's because the BMW is so new but it just doesn't have the same raw power feeling that my C2 has....granted maybe its the fact that my exhaust sounds like a Le Mans car screaming though town....I guess im just a little let down by the feel of the BMW. The same thing even happened when i had an M6 earlier this summer for Gold Cup. Anyone else have a similar feeling when getting into newer (more powerful) cars?

Yes, my father owns a Mercedes AMG 430 CLK which is around 300bhp and I look after it most summers for him, which he spends abroad. It is certainly a match for my 964 in a straight line, and is a much more civilised town car in London. However, in EVERY other way the 964 beats it hands down. Feelgood factor, looks, handling, driveability, noise. Just cruising along with that huge rev counter in front, the view through the windscreen framed in those gorgeous wings, the haunches that follow you in the side mirrors, the flat-six-symphony through the always-opened window and the responsiveness of the brakes, throttle and steering, the smell of oil & leather.... I could go on and on. You all know exactly what I mean.

There's a reason my 330 is my daily. It does that really well. Comfortable and easy to drive around town. It doesn't exite the soul nor invigorate the senses though. The 964 isn't a great daily but it pushes my buttons. So each car serves their purpose for me.

It's likely that the 335 is just so refined compared to a 964 it doesn't feel quick. The M6 though I don't get. The last one of those I drove was an absolute animal. Especially with the auto-manual in it's most aggressive setting. Bwaaaaaa BANG! Bwaaaa BANG!.... Either one, incidentally, would blow the doors of a 964 in a drag race.

I find new cars today plush and isolated. Too much creature comforts and gadgets for an enthusiast car. Carmakers pack anything and everything as the buyers today want one car to do it all. Do we need power seats, navigation systems etc in the 'sportscar'?

As for a drag race....I'm no longer 17 and quarter mile/stop light drags don't impress me much.

I know...964 guys are typically not into drag racing. There are lots of modern cars that can go toe to toe with the 964 in a straight line. A Mazdaspeed3 can probably hold its head up high against one...but that's like boxing a senior citizen...what's the fun in that?

My car feels right. It sounds right. It smells right. I have no desire to buy anything new. There's something missing in the new cars that I get immediately when I slip into my RSA.

The M6 was fast don't get me wrong...but i was expected mind altering fast. I had it on full "M" mode and the trans was set to the most aggressive setting. I knew i was flying as per the gauge on the right...but it just didn't feel like 110mph. Def. too quiet with stock exhaust... My C2 has the perfect feel and SOUND despite all the cars on the road that will smoke it.

I've only ever driven ONE car that was "mind altering" fast.

Game, set, match. I find that car so damn ugly though.

Ugly? How about now? We had the GS version a few weeks ago for a photo shoot.

Steen,

How are you?

Got a new car BTW. Finished the deal this past Monday. Springs and RH 3.6 Speedlines on the way. Going to try an RS alignment as well. Then some new pictures so I can change my avatar;-)
