Soundsystem
The stock system was very good in it’s day. There were a few different head unit options - Porsche CR-1( in dash tape), Porsche CD-2 (in dash CD), Blaupunkt Stuttgart (tape), Blaupunkt Reno, there are more. There was also an optional 6 CD changer in the front trunk.
There is a four channel external amp/booster under the passengers seat The rear speakers are 4X6 plates and 5.25 woofer and tweeter components in the doors except in the cab which does not have the rear deck. Instead it has small speakers next to the rear seats.
By today’s standard it is not very good. The speakers if original will probably be dry or cracked. The amp is not very powerful. The speakers are not big enough to move an enough air to produce lows. The acoustics are not great in the car.
Most people will have upgraded the stock system by now, it is relativly simple.

agree-stock amp is really weak, and head unit old technology.
most who enjoy music have upgraded head unit (with ipod & mp3 dock) / speakers / amp.
stock amp is under passenger seat, and there are new amps that fit there...or trunk install is also popular.
if you want to see pics of aftermarket installation pm me.

Later (92 and 93 MY) some other CD players were mounted in 964. Such as Blaupunkt London RDM42 and RDM43. Older Porsche CD-2 is made by Alpine, so it's not bad.

Thanks for the info. Basically what was good then is now outdated.
I was also wondering if there existed some specific trim parts to hold the speakers. I am thinking of the specific door panels like in the 993. Did the 964 have that?
The 944 had a well thought out architecture with the components in the door pockets, which was very discrete, for instance.

if you refer to the above schematic provided by BlueHeeler, you can see the trim plates/speaker mounts and cover (mesh grid).
i reused all stock mounts/mesh covers with installation of new bostons (speakers/tweeter) in the front and alpines in the back sized same as stock.

C'mon, somebody had to say it. You mentioned a good layout on the 944 - I disagree. My 968 factory HiFi system is not very good and pretty difficult to upgrade properly. 911 variants, with thier much deeper door mount and better positioning are a superior setup.
I would suggest searching for the CDR220, a decent amp (Alpine PDX series) for under the seat and a good set of 6.5" components in the doors.
Here's a similar CD player:

I intend to fit a Pioneer DEH P4100SD CD/USB/SD radio, along with a small amplifier under the seat. I saw that the 993 has a nice enclosure for teh speakers in the doors, which appeal to me aesthetically.
To be frank, I have very litle knowledge of things audio, this being the first 911 where I want some tunes. I'll lean on the collective knoledge when the time comes.

I have the 993 HiFi system also. The enclosures are not bad, if a bit bulky. I was thinking about putting some decent components in there but o think I am more inclined to go with RS door panels and some speakers.
I think you're talking about Nokia Sound System. Sounds really nice. But I think it'll not fit 964 doors. And it's expensive (even normal door panels are not cheap). So better idea is just to change door speakers for 16 cm.
