I'll be ordering these to go with aero bases (like the white car above) in the near future for myself (as a Christmas gift from my wife). Can anyone comment on standard vs convex mirrors? I can live with the visibility compromise, which is why I'm getting these mirrors, but I'd just like to hear others' opinions on the visibility with the standard vs convex lenses.

I chose a standard driver's side lens, and convex on the passenger's side.

If I were to order it again, I'd put convex on both sides. The convex surface is not too extreme, so it doesn't distort the field of vision too much and offers greater visibility.

That's exactly the kind of useful response I was looking for. Thanks!

911Jetta: how did you black out your tail lights and reflectors? I have a midnight blue and I think blacked out lights would look good.

Thanks,
jlo

The subtle mods to the wheels, headlight rings, and mirrors work really well with the factory trim, bumpettes, and black lower side sils. Nice touches.

I know people like aero mirrors (and they do look great), but I love the size of these mirrors.
Small and racy, as seen on so many iconic factory racing Porsches in the 70's.

Have to agree. Mods are a difficult thing as there is always the risk of it looking 'not quite right'. That looks as if the factory would have done it that way and better than aero's for me..

I agree, it's not for everyone, most people would prefer the stock mirrors. Especially when just looking at them online.
That said, the modification is definitely a nod to some of the old racing Porsches I love.

Black headlight rings, and single, reversed wiper too. It's fun to use a little bit on Porsche's racing history on these cars...

Plus, modern mirrors are huge! I like how Porsche redesigned the 991s mirrors, and moved them to the doors again.
They seem smaller, than 997 mirrors, and have a little retro look to them.

I wrapped the lights in vinyl, like Gus' red kit, except I chose black. I might do something different on a different color car, but it works from me on a Slate Grey car. I've seen it on a dark colored car and it looks very mean. I'll keep looking for pictures... It's hard to believe it's been on the car for over 4 years now.

Lights out - smoked vinyl covered corners and tails

BTW, I think the black vinyl is very safe, safer even. Note the contrast below when the lights are on. Since everything is normally black, instead of pink and red, you know when the lights are on!

I found a pic, not M. Blue, but you get the idea. BTW, it's TRAKCAR's new 964, a former 997 GT3 4.0 owner!

I love this mirror. If someone sat on a flag mirror and smashed it down....

That little extra space away from the door relay makes a difference to being able to see bikes and cars in your blind spots, on a race track only car sure you can have your teeny mirrors in the door corners but if you need or use wing mirrors on the road...

Welcome to the Vitaloni 964 club ! Here's a shot of my Californias

Well I finally got mine installed. I choose to use aero bases as I think the curves of the aero base closely match that of the mirrors to make for a visual appealing fit. The biggest issue I ran into was the aero mirror's larger diameter cylinder that is coupled to the base of the mirror housing. A lot of plastic needs to be drilled out of the base, compromising some structural rigidity. It worked, but it was tight, and I didn't even realize there was a different size cylinder between the square and aero bases until I was done drilling the first base.

Thanks specifically to 911Jetta and Cosmos99 for the inspiration and technical assistance. This Pelican-Parts thread was also extremely helpful: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...-1-mirror.html

No great photos yet, but here are a few from the install process.

The first issue to overcome - wiring. I choose to just cut it as close as possible to where it connects to the old flag mirror and wire what's left in the door in place for easy access in the future.

After reading through every post of the thread I linked to above, I realized no two ways will be alike. There are so many ways you could do this. Just go to the hardware store and walk the plumbing and hardware isles and you'll soon start to figure it out. For my solution, I ended up using a large bolt, a few metal washers, a few rubber washers, and a pipe end cap. The hardest part was dremeling the bottom of the pipe end to meet the different angles of the mirror's plastic skeleton so that when the top nut was tightened, even downward pressure would be applied.

All painted and buttoned up. I looked at a lot of photos of 911s of different eras and modifications and found the best in my opinion was painted. It sure cost me a pretty penny though.

Very nice! It looks great with the Aero base.

Magnus Walker likes this mod too! I'm totally flattered.

Looks fantastic on your car. The black flag base makes the mirrors look factory. Love it!

I fitted them & thought they looked pretty good but found them completely useless at letting you know what is behind you so I changed them for Vitaloni Californias which are like mini cups but you get a good view behind too.
