Hi- I'm about to replace the cap and rotor on my 964. This is my first time so any pitfalls I should look out for aside from making sure to number the plug wires from distributor cap? Any tricks or special tools to make this task easier and go smoothly? (I hope this will be straight forward.) Thanks!

The only tool I can think of is a screwdriver for the two cap hold-down screws.

Make sure you have the distributor cap numbering sticker to help with reattaching the plug wires into the caps.
And your wires will tell you which cap (it'll either labeled, "I", or "II") and which cap hole (labeled, "1" thru "6") to plug in to.

I think that labeling gave me enough concern to post an entry, here, on Jaime's DIY thread, once, long ago...

The Phillips screws securing the caps are usually seized (i.e. apply penetrating oil for a couple days) and the furthest one at the rear is obstructed by the rear bodywork. Make sure you have a screw driver which fits under the lip of this bodywork so you can apply maximum torque straight on to the scew head otherwise it can be easily stripped. Apply dielectric grease to the inside of the plug caps before reconnecting them.

my rubber plug caps were really stuck to the plastic cap. I tore a couple trying to pry them off with a screw driver. I think they sell a tool to pull them off without tearing them.
Anybody got a couple extra ends they want to get rid of ?

I do but I am a dem and that would just be to much work for me .

You should replace your dist. belt while you are in there. The belt costs around $6 dollars, make sure that you get a pin as well. You can order it from Pelican Parts for reasonable price. That last screw which is hidden from view is the most difficult to access and remove. Guide it in with your fingers, good luck.

A piece of advise on this, since most people don't use anti-seize on the screws... Try to tighten the screws a little bit to break the torque. It will be much easier that way. And use the perfect size screwdriver, since those screws are made of cheese. Anything other than the perfect size philips head will strip them.

Pull the plug wires off the cap before you undo the screws because as jimq says they are REALLY tight! With the cap undone you can't get enough leverage.

I used a flexible screwdriver to get at the problem screw by the ducting. The plug wires were very tight, but I gave them a twist first to get them moving.

You might be lucky like me, mine had lots of copper grease on them and screwed out no problem. No harm to take a couple of photos of the wires so you have a reference on how they go back.
