Default three and a half quarts in 4500 miles

In the last 20 months I've done 4500 miles in my 964 (including 4 DE events) and added 3 and a half quarts of oil, that means 1 quart in 1300 miles of median consumption

I think that is a good number ....isnīt it?

If I got down to 1 qt./1000 mi., I'd be seriously salting money away for a rebuild. I know that's within 'spec', but that's a lot of oil.

1qt./600 mi. is two-cycle territory.

I've got 3500 mi. on this change so far, and it's barely below the full mark.

I think your oil consumption will vary depending on how you use the car, mine does drink a bit of oil, but I use it mostly for short trips; ones in a while I see a bit of smoke on cold start after sitting for a few days, but no smoke when driving or warm starts.
Page 110 in Adrians book states" Oil Consumption Approx. 1.5 liters per 1000km (1.6 US qt per 621 miles), that does seem like a lot of oil but maybe that is how these engines were designed.

Thanks a lot for your advice and comments....

I should add that since I changed some oil lines and gaskets (distribution covers etc etc) that were leaking and also changed from using argentinian oil to german oil (lubro Moly) my use of oil is much less now, maybe 1 quart in 1700 miles

Given you had 4 DE events in the 4500 mile mix, I'd not lose a wink of sleep. I easily use/burn 1/2 to 3/4 qt per DE and most everyone else I drive with does about the same.
