Default 964 Fans, need advice.

Let me introduce myself first. I'm Scott from Tempe AZ. I've been an air-cooled
VW enthusiast for the last 20 years but have always wanted to get a air-cooled 911.
I have the room, the tools and the mechanical competency for another “project” car but I
figured I’d ask the experts first. I am a parts counterman at a local Ford dealer and the
other day the sales department took in a 964 on trade. I’ll be honest and you can tell
by the photo that the car is rough but mechanically sound. The final decision will be made
when I can fire it up and take it for a spin.

Here’s the skinny,
1990 Carrera 2
Silver exterior, White interior. Sunroof.
130K miles.
Good tires, needs front brakes, needs paint/trim work but rust free and super straight.
No visible oil leaks and the engine compartment and under carriage is clean.
Haven’t gotten to check electrical but the door lock system works.
Also has the owners manual, tool kit and inflator.
I can pick this up for under $4000

For that money even if you part it out you'd make close to 3x what you paid. Awesome deal!

That being said, if you are planning on keeping it and driving it, the first thing I'd do is a compression and leak-down test on the engine. If the engine is in need of an overhaul you're looking at $7-15K (depending on how crazy you want to go) in rebuild charges. Parts alone for the rebuild will cost north of $4K if you decide to do it yourself. Then there is clutch, transmission, suspension, electrical check-ups you want to perform. I don't expect it to pass with flying colors, but let us know what you find out and we can give you a better idea on what to expect. And don't forget about Porsche salvage yards across the country that can sell you used OEM parts relatively cheap.

Good luck!

Trade it in as cash for clunker towards a new Focus from Ford

And I am 2nd in line if you decide to pass and make a small profit for the lead.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I'll be keeping up with this thread.
When the chance to run it comes along I'll know better which way I'm
headed with it. I've always wanted a Carrera and this might be my
opportunity to get into one that just needs a little TLC.
Keeping my fingers crossed that mechanically it will be good to go.
Funny you brought up Cash for Clunkers, when I first spotted it
I gasped thinking it was traded in on that program. Be a shame
to scrap a 964!

Bad news. The used car department here at the dealership decided to not
sell me the car. Seems they think they can make more money wholesaling it
out. Typical car sales mentality, profit before employees. Too bad, I could have
really taken good care of the car. However it has given me motivation on thinking
about purshasing a 911. Thanks again for the help guys.

....still might not be the end, if you match the wholesale price might still turn out be a good deal. strong likelihood it will go to a small broker vs larger porsche dealer, and small broker will factor in all costs to upgrade to decent sales spec, plus discount for his financing costs, holding costs, in addition to spread for his brokerage.

They have $3500 into it. Employees get it at $300 over. At least that's the policy
except when they want to change the rules. So even after the
typical $200 recon fee I would have had around $4000 plus tax into it.
If any of you guys have a wholesaler license I could give you contact info.
Rather see it go to someone who would appreciate it.
Shoot me a PM.

That's interesting that they don't want to sell you the car. When I worked at a dealership we had the same program. $200 over the high wholesale bid. For example a wholesaler bid the car at $5000, you could pick it up for $5200. Not sure why they wouldn't sell it to you. Maybe you should talk to the GM. More than likely the used car manager is just friends with whatever wholesaler bid the car and wants to sell it to him. Wholesalers don't like to have a deal pulled out from under them typically.

This whole process happened to me on an NSX one time.

Good luck.
