I wish I had the opportunity. The deal the car was traded in on hasn't even
been closed so there hasn't even been any bids made. They flat out told me
that they are going to wholesale it and flat out not even give me a chance
with it. Can't believe I've been at dealerships for the last 20 years...
However if the deal was to fall through, I could always contact the owner.
He was giving it away for $3500 after all.

What if you struck a "deal" with a local dealer to buy the car and pass it on to you at what he has in it plus a small gratuity? I've gone that in the past and made out quite well.

I'm going to track it as far as possible. Unfortunately it will probably be
auctioned by one of the big dealer houses like Adesa which doesn't sell to
individuals. My best bet is if the deal falls through and at his point with my
attitude towards the sales department, I hope it does.

It's my guess the owner thinks he is getting much more than $3.5K. He probably has a written deal showing at least twice that amount. However, even at that, it is probably still worth going to the customer and offering to make a deal. Who knows, he might just bite!

I had a similar heartbreaker on a beautiful Midnight Blue 993. Stepson's a buyer for Carmax. He told me I could buy it on his discount for $16,000. But then management determined that they couldn't sell it to me because the check engine light was on. Could have done all the work to fix it myself and still would have been way under wholesale.

P.S.
My experience was, if it goes to wholesale, which the 993 I had in my sights did, you'll have a tough time buying it for less than market. It's an auction and the winning bidder, if not a friend, will want to make his profit, which means market price.

Well seems that the issue with the sale to me is what account the sale is posted to. Being if it's
wholesaled out the profit is posted to one account vs. a sale to me which is a retail account. Seems
like the sales dept didn't want to figure out how to do this so they just denied selling the car to me.
Lucky for me my girlfriend happens to be the government fleet sales manager here and she went to
bat for me and showed them how the apply it to the accounts. So now all I have to do is outbid the
phone bid from the auction buyer. Following the typical rules the car will probably phone bid at half of
low book. So I still have a good chance of getting the car for a great price. I'll also get the chance to
drive it on Monday.
I'll keep you guys posted.
Edit.
Uploaded another picture.

In my haste I failed to see the fact that the previous owners phone number was still on the back
window of the car! I called it up, told him who I was and that I worked at the dealership and asked away.
The best part about it is that he's already traded the car so he doesn't have to embelish any
problems it has. He owned the car for about 4 years and said he serviced it regularly. As far as he
knew the engine has never been rebuilt. He also wasn't sure about the clutch. He says it passed
smog everytime. The oil lines have been replaced but he did say it leaked a little from the case
seams. Now this is kind of common of split case VW motors but is it on these motors?
He also stated that the seatbelt light and the ABS light were on and didn't have the codes reset.
Stated he heard it was somewhat common on these cars? Also said it needed the power steering
belt replaced but he never got to it because of the belts location.
Any of this to be worried about?
