In the case of a 89 964 the "5" in the VIN indicates a USA/Canada car. If you look in the Porsche PET diagrams, at the end of the PDF is information on 964 VIN's and VIN number ranges.

I think the ROW cars were produced first in the 400xxx range followed by the US/CAN cars in the 450xxx range.

I think Red Rooster stands as the oldest we've seen. I'm sure he'll be pleased! :-)

Mine's KS450834 with a build date of Aug 89. I wonder when they actually started building the 90's? as they still had almost 300 more to build to get to the 1117 USA KS45xxxx cars? Apparently by november 89 they had already built 400+ 90's (as per scott 964's VIN). (quick math - between aug and november 89 they built about 700 964's?)

There is a VIN registry started already but looks like it's kinda stalled:

I started the 964 VIN registry back in 2007 and had close to 50-60 entries. But after a SQL DB failure and subsequent backup failure I lost most entries. Wont happen again.

Maybe LS401443 should be a KS? Maybe it's the last of the 89's? Maybe a typo - 143 vs 1443? You'd think that if it's the beginning of the 90MY run it would have a lower VIN.

thread bump on this as I was researching how old mine was. Looks like jzc28 is older than mine, but I'm up there. Only 28 digits off. A good chance they witnessed each other be assembled.
KS450150 (89 C4 guards red) 02/89 date

Just cause it's fun, I was also wondering how it ties in with engine number. PET says the 89s were engine 62K00501 - 62K10000. I've got 62K00626, pretty close to what I would expect with my VIN. BTW, does anyone know what VIN the factory started at? I've heard it wasn't 001
