Default Transmission howling/whining

Hey guys took my car for a spin tonight, i noticed that the whining/howling noise seems to be getting louder, its loud enough now to be kind of annoying. Car shifts great and no vibration. The noise occurs when i am at a constant speed in 3rd 4th and 5th gears, like when there is no load on the tranny just a constant speed. It may do it in first and second but i havent really checked. Any ideas as to what this may be???

Jerry:

It sounded fine when I drove it a while back. Some gear noise is normal. The rubber mounts isolate most of it from the chassis. Are you sure you don't have a collapsed mount or a metal-metal contact somewhere?

If it is the differential going bad, it will be just as noisey to someone standing 10 feet away (the cabin isloates the noise). Have someone do a couple of drive-bys while you stand at the curb, and see if the sound is as bad as it sounds inside the car. Drop by if there is not a compentent driver locally or you want a second set of ears.

Ok Paul i may come up there and let you hear it soon. It is something that has definately gotten worse in the last couple of months.
Indy i topped up the lube about 1800 miles ago with Mobil/Delvac.
If it was the Differential, Is that something that could be fixed without having to rebuild the entire transmission???
