First Post - Looking for a nice 964
#16
Bill, how much do you think is a good price for that 964 on eBay? Their Buy It Now is 15,999 but it's only up to 8,300 this morning. Is $10k-$12k a good range for that? It is really clean in person and apparently it doesn't leak.
eTom thanks for the link!
Everyone, thanks for all the tips. I will have to make a decision this weekend on the 964 cab on eBay. If not, I'm sure there's more to come!

It's up to $10.1K now. As I said, the repair order has enough sheetmetal and all the "right parts" replaced to be ok. I would like to think that any serious issues would have been taken care of as noted. They did do a valve adjust at the time, so I would like to think any potential issues would be noted ( decent wrenches will note potential probs found, if at the minimum to avoid potential liability). My guess the reserve is $15K. If I could snag it for $14K, I would take the risk on it, but then I'd have to have the car shipped, which puts the price back up there (I don't have 2-3 days to fly and drive). Actually, what I question is when a car has only racked up 4K miles in 5 years. Was the car only driven on Memorial and Labor Days?
It's a tough call. Some people are willing to take more chances than others. I've had extreme good luck buying online. My last two Porsches and two Land Rovers came from eBay and Auto Trader, with uneven buying procedure (i.e., not all got the proper PPI). They were all generally good vehicles, and all were "drivers". I bought my 993 w/o PPI (before joining RL and finding out about SAI horrors). My 75k mi C4 had no sign of clogged ports, and did not even need the "flush" treatment. Car had very little issues, and I even sold it to a fellow RL member. My 996 was PPI'd, and RMS issues never scared me.
I've settled on looking for 964's in my quest for an Old School 911. I hate myself for selling my 993, and moving up to my "benign" 996. I swore I'd get an older driver car for little money, and fix any of the small stuff. I'd wouldn't mind an SC, but don't want to deal w/CIS, and the 80's G50 cars are bringing really high prices. I want a bit of technology in my car, and the 964 is the clear choice for value. Plenty of passion in these little oil leakers. I'm leveraging my 22 years of Porsche experience with some solid, and not so solid cars owned, along with the 964 stuff that I've picked up here. Since, I want a driver, I'm looking for value. I agree in principle w/William's (groovzilla) pricing tiers, but I also believe there are a few gems that are lurking in the lower prices, especially in this economy.
Problem is, you need to keep reading the advice that people here are giving you (PPI!), but it is hard sometimes to balance that with what your gut and tolerance for risk is telling you. Don't jump at the first car, but if you've seen a few by comparison and know what you're looking for, and you find one that really sparks at you at a great price, sometimes you roll the dice. And, if your car starts having problems, there's plenty of great folks here that will give advice, without saying "I told you so" (well, at least not much ).
Sorry for being equivocal, but that's how it's worked for me.
Good luck in your decision. I hope we don't get in a bidding war!
cheers!
Bill

Steve, I got your email, sorry didn't get a chance to respond. It looks like a really nice 964 (would probably be out of my price range). Care to trade for a nice '01 e38 bimmer?
You can email me more details if you don't mind, and don't forget to include the price. Thanks!
Bill, thanks again for the feedback. It's ending in a few hours. This is so confusing and exciting at the same time!
