Thanks for all the info and the link to the previous thread, answers a lot of questions. The "best car you can get" is good advice, now if I could just find one of those...lots of old warn out and needy ones out ther, or garage queens with asking prices out of range...the search is half the fun.

I am going to delete all my comments, except this:

The impact bumpers of the mid-70's through the eighties is... Okay, I'll delete
that as well.

as the former owner of an SC and a current owner of a 964, I find the 964 to be a better all around car.
Just the improvement in A/C will make it a better fun car.

take your time deciding, drive as many of both as you can. You will know when you find the right one.

hmmm... much better A/C. And airbags.
Yup -- both definite steps toward better rides.

And don't forget about anti-lock brakes.
(Threshold braking's fine... til that reptilian part of the noggin takes over in an emergency.)

oh. If this guy were doing his own wrenching, I'd tell him to go '964' so quick, it'd make yer head spin.
I Love My 964.

Thumbs up Why not both?

Then there are some of us who can never make up their minds....

They really are Soooooo different. The targa ALWAYS puts a smile on your face... makes you feel like a kid. The 964 dances on mountain roads.

Talking Why not two?

Then again, there are some that need two because they can't stop with doing just a simple oil change and it takes weeks to get it back on the road....

just had a very spirited drive in my 964 ripping up some twisty back roads following my buddy in a '97 C4S, all I can say is these cars are unbelievably fun, I've had SC's in the past and currently have a 930, but these 964's are different, a lot more refined with more creature comforts but don't think they are soft, they love to be punished and will laugh in your face when your done. . .

Love that Targa - wish I could find one out here in So cal that looks like that one. Been in the market for about 6 months now and really can't find that "in between car". Something that is not an overpriced garage queen or an low priced, really hi miles car that probably needs lots of work.

Its an interesting search because a lower mile car that has been pampered is not necessarily the better car and it seems these cars need to be driven and the lower mileage ones can have more problems.

Anyone knows of a good 3.2 or 964 in Southern Cali, let me know.

Thanks again for all the input.

I miss my SC Targa, enjoy my 964 Speedster, and absolutely am in awe of my 996 GT3. Choosing between an SC, 3.2 Carrera and 964 at the $16K price point- I would go with an 87/88/89 Targa with the G50 transmission b/c of raw feel, personality and Cab feel but still being able to hear the sound system... You might be able to find an 87 in your price range.

With that said, i would be happy with any of them! Good living...

Best of luck with the search...

I certainly don't disagree and just to prove your point...

If you want to come over and drive my 964, you are welcome to. I have owned many early cars (pre 73's) an SC, an 04 GT3, an RSA and now a GPW 91 964. They are all different. I am enjoying the 964 like I've enjoyed no other. Not sure why yet, but I think a large part of it is this Rennlist community, and that the 964 has such amazing potential to be whatever kind of P-car you want it to be. There is simply so much one can add in terms of performance upgrades, that the car has almost limitless potential. PM me if you'd like to stop by some time. I'm in Glendale.

I believe the Bruce Anderson quote is, "Plan to buy the newest Porsche (any model) that you can afford. "

Then by that logic, I should buy a Boxter as that would be the newest Porsche I could afford.

I guess the question come down to - for $20K, what is the better car. Based on what I have seen $20k gets a fairly good 3.2, but I am not so sure this is true of a 964?
