Default Transmission Oil Leak Part 2

From the original thread pics (transmission right side), it appeared that the leak was coming from the right side output flange seal (thanks, Steen & Geoffrey).

Prior to ordering the parts I decided to make a more thorough investigation of the entire transmission area. The pictures below are of the left side of the transmission. It appears that the left side output flange seal is also leaking and possibly the "O" Ring for the transmission cover. After a call to Sunset Imports of OR, I ordered 2 shaft sealing rings part #999-113-347-40 (# 11 in parts illustration) & an O ring part #999-701-745-40 (#17 in the parts illustration). A question from the first thread was, "is #28 in the illustration that Steen posted the output flange seal?" Answer: No it's not and does not appear in that illustration, the output flange seal appears in the illustration below part # as noted above. # 28 is tapper roller bearing part # 999-059-064-00.

So now I've established I probably have to replace both output flange seals and the transmission side cover o ring. Can anyone give me an idea of what I'm getting into on the left side especially replacing the cover o ring. I assume I will have to drain the transmission oil prior to removing the left side cover?

Thanks,

JF

I'd be surprised if #17 was bad.
#11 is giving everyone in the neighborhood a bad reputation.
Evict and replace him with new and afterwords things should be dry.

Why does #17 raise your suspicions?

+1 ^

Why not clean all well and test? My bet is also on #11...

Lonnie & Jamie:

Thanks for your reply, my plan is to clean and try to test which is somewhat problematic since my car is not registered for the street. I ordered the o ring (17) just in case, since it's hard to know if it's leaking as well with the mess and I didn't want to start the repairs and not have it on hand if needed.. It was only $7.

Cool. You did the right thing ordering the seals just in case.

Keep us posted.

Yup. What Jaime says.

(And even if you don't need it, it sounds like you got your own little Recovery Stimulus Plan going with that tranny cover seal.)

@993PET Did you do this job yourself?

I need to replace my #17 and wondering if it is a DIY?

Thanks!

Before you try to replace the large seal (#17), have you replaced #11? That is the most likely and easy to change.

The problem with replacing #17 with the engine and gearbox still connected is that the heat exchangers get in the way. Which means pulling studs from the bell-housing. Not entirely a BIG deal but something to be aware of.
