94 and 91 ecu compatability

94 and 91 ecu compatability
Hi guys,
I recently bought a 94 3.6 complete with chipped 94 ecu and the engine was a dud so the seller (private) has sent over a 91 3.6 engine.
will the 94 ecu be able to function the 91 3.6 engine reasonably.
I heard a rumour that later ecus can function earlier motors ok but earlier ecus cant handle the later motors.....?
has anyone had experience here...I know the different air intakes may cause a few idle/stall issues but any experiences would be appreciated.
