Just an update to say that last week my old flange on the heat exchanger was cut off:

And a new one fitted in its place:

My local independent Porsche Garage (Unit 11 Warrington) got the flange fabricated and fitted it for a tenth of the price of a new heat exchanger

That's pretty cool! Did they do the welding with the heat exchange in place, on the car?

Looks like a great solution of a difficult problem.

Yes they did. As you can see from the pics it was first tacked on from the outside and then welded inside to make it gas tight. I can see them doing this more and more for 964 owners that are going to suffer this problem due to the corrosive British climate.

Nice one Boxsey...wish i had thought of that when i had the same problem ! Though i dont think garages down south are quite as accomodating as your local, cost wise. Still got to get mine done as can now hear mild 'blowing' around that flange after just returning from Le Mans in a 600 mile round trip. Will get the cat bypass and heat exchanger put on when i next get a work gap.

Boxsey, Did you use the old flange as template to get the new one fabricated, or use a gasket or something else? My one is shot too and the the cat is basically a sieve so needs replacing. Was looking at the whole fabspeed route but just too worried about the noise for track.
My local specialist say they will do something similar but I might just try and help them on the way. If I can get the flange fabricated in advance that means less time without the car
Thanks
Steve
