There are 4 bolts at the flange end, not 3. So 2 out of 4 doesn't sound good at all. In fact, unless all 4 were ok, it would be a no no for me.

I meant 4 bolts, was obviously still blurry eyed at 9am on a sunday

bump, still awaiting for Mr moots response. Anyone else have a heat exchanger gathering dust somewhere ? Otherwise i will call around the breakers and see whats about. Still dont know whether to use Stregas x-changer with its rusty state, seems kind of self defeating. It would solve my probs in the short term but no doubt lead to more in the longer term.
Moots is my O-b-wan kenobi at the moment.

ouch, sorry to see that Steve, its not a pleasant surprise

Mr moots came up trumps for me at the weekend a quick traffic free blast from Kent to Hertfordshire first thing sunday morning and i now have a shiny heat exchanger to put on the car with the bypass. Top man

I was hoping to get it all put on before Le Mans trip in June but not sure how i will find the time or if the garage can fit me in before then.

And so are my new valve covers and tinware which were the reason for taking the cat off:

Now just have to come up with something to resolve the flange issue. Welding in studs has been one suggestion. The other option is to pick up a used heat exchanger (like Mark has) but I just know that will only lead to the studs breaking at the manifold, creating yet another job .

They look nice. Did you buy these from this country or the US?

If you don't mind saying, roughly how much were they?

Gulp...nobody mentioned that bit I hope not Whats the consequences of that happening and how do they fix it ? I hope the HPM guys can swap it out without all that extra drama and no doubt, expense.

I got them direct the US via another Rennlister. They worked out at £218 which included gaskets and shipping (just over a week using the USPS). However I believe the company who makes these ones (Imagine Auto) have ceased trading but others on here are using similar covers made by Hargett Precision which work out at a similar price either direct from Hargett or from Pelican parts.

No need to worry... your garage will be used to dealing with corroded manifold studs...I was referring more to it being problematic to a DIYer like me .

BTW didn't you win that ebay auction for heat exchangers too...only 1 bid which won them for a tenner?

No, i pm'd strega on ebay and asked if i could pull out of the bidding as didnt see any point in replacing my rusted heat exchanger with a slightly less rusty version He was kind enough to let me do so. (a fellow 964 rennlister i think).
Ironically i ended up near his area at the weekend so probably could have picked them up nice and cheaply.

Glad to hear that the manifold studs will not be too much of a drama. I used to do all my own car DIY 'when i were a lad' including swapping exhaust systems out, but cannot be bothered these days with all the frustration, soot in eyes and ripped knuckles ! If i had a car lift in my garage i would be sorely tempted again.

For that kind of money I'd easily upgrade to a complete stainless steel system like the one from fabspeed.

I think I have also seen SSI under a 3.6 somewhere and forget the cat

After a trip to my local Porsche specialist I'm hopeful that they can come up with a solution for this all too common problem (in the UK anyway). Will post more details when I have them.

In the mean my flange is holding out so I can at least use it for short shopping trips.
