Default Changed C2 Oil. First time by me...

Decided to change the oil in the C2 and the 73 today. Moving from Mobil 1 in the C2 to Brad Penn 20/50, to match the dino I run in the early car. It was quite easy actually. The toughest lesson I learned was the oil from the oil filter.......even though I punched a hole in the filter before draining both resevoirs, I still had a mess when I unscrewed the filter. I decided not to take the right rear wheel off to access the drain plug up in there to relieve that mess. I'll know to place rags in there next time. Re-torqued the plugs based on the factory service manual specs, and carefully refilled the car with 7 Qts. to start. After checking, driving, re checking, filling driving etc. finally filled the car with a total of 10.75 US qts, or 10 Liters. The early car took 11.25 Qts. so very similar.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Brad Penn works out in the 91. I have heard some users report less oil leaking, or in some cases no further oil leaking. I will report on the progress.

I feel good.

I'm still on the fence about changing mine. I can make a mess changing it on my American truck.

Did you remove the oil fill cap after putting the hole in the filter? It seems to let more oil out of the filter (by letting air in, I suspect).

Thanks Marc,

Ding, ding, ding....I bet you are right on the money. I did not remove said cap prior to draining. I'm sure this will make all the difference. Simple physics at work.

Thank You

I would like to hear your impressions on the BP oil. Ive got about 700 miles on the car after changing to Brad Penn from Castrol (no bashing please). The car has a long documented history of having Kendal GT1 and a short time using Castrol GTX.

I have noticed a few things swithing to BP:

Minor leaks have greatly diminished
Valve train noise is quieter
Warm oil pressure is lower - from 2 bar to 1.5 bar
Car runs a little warmer - a tick over 8 o'clock on the guage

plastic grocery bag over the filter contains the aforementioned mess.
(trying it myself next time.)

Sometimes the simplest solution is the most elegant! I better start stocking up since grocery stores up here are starting to charge for each bag, or outright banning them.

Love this board. Plastic bag.... Brilliant!

As for the BP, I did notice that it seemed to run a smidge warmer, just over the first marker, probably 200 deg. or so, also seemed quieter. I didn't notice any pressure difference. I will update the reports as the mileage grows.

I just did mine a couple of weeks ago with the hole and the filler open and no mess. Be sure to tape over the hole before you take the filter off. As said above it wont work with the filler tight.

I used baby diapers around the filter to absorb the spillage. Works like a charm.

I used a ShamWow (because they suck for pretty much anything else ). Then a hooker came by and kicked my a$$.

Out of the literally dozens of vehicles I've changed oil on, I would put the 964 at the easier end of the scale. (and that include the removal of the undertray )

I didn't find it necessary to do anything special about the filter. A wad of paper towels seemed to do the job. I made less of a mess than the Porsche indy who did the first one after I bought it.

It was a good opportunity to scrub the dog outta everything underneath there, too.

AND I use that big-*** covered oil pan for all the cars now. Wish I had bought one years ago!

I just stick a bit of tape over the hole once it is all drained and have no mess to contain.

Just did my oil change this evening. Poked hole in the filter and then covered with tape. Didn't spill any out of the filter when I removed it. Although I had a wad of paper towels handy underneath it just in case.
