Default Oil change.

Well my new aquisition has 3k on the oil. I've got a Porsche dealer 40m away, thinking of having them do it out of convenience. What should that run me?

Just a guess, but I would imagine $100+ but less than $150.

The oil used will impact the price, too. Mobil 1 can be as much as $9 a quart in the NY area. That's $90 right there. Plus an hour at $85-95 labor rate. I do my own.

Edit: not that I'm advocating M1; I use Brad Penn which is less expensive and my car likes it better.

why are you changing it with only 3K miles?

+1. With the dry sump, large oil volume, and synthetic oil, 12 months or 6,000 miles is still very conservative for a street car.

Workshop calls for 12K-15K miles between oil changes... I don't wait that long and do it around 7K miles...

3K miles is just an overkill...

Thanks for the info. I could've sworn I heard 3k intervals. Must have been the shop I took it to for my lines and such. They topped me off after changing my cooling lines so at least some of my oil has only 1500m on it. I think I'll wait a little longer to get it changed. I'll have to be sure to check the level regularly. Do the dealers offer a PCA discount on oil changes?

My rule of thumb is, you buy a new (well, used) car, you change all the fluids. That includes oil, brake fluid, PS fluid, coolant and blinker fluid (just checking if you're paying attention!)... So I'd change the oil.

I change my oil every 3-4K miles, or once a year.

If you just got the car, I agree with Ilko. Change everything so you have a base line...

When I got mine I did all the fluids, filters (air, oil, fuel), belts, and small oil tank hoses.

What weight Brad Penn oil are you using?

I run 20w-50 API SJ in the summer and mix it 50%/50% with 10w-30 in the winter; as I live in NY, drive all year and it gets rather cold for the 20-50.

I get it shipped from LN Engineering 815-472-2939 (no affiliation) because I can't find it locally.

Note that there have been a lot of threads on modern oil formulations, suggesting careful selection for our engines.

What's the minimum temp recommended for Brad Penn 20w-50? I live in Minnesota where temps are pretty extreme. I don't drive my C2 in the winter, but it can be a bit cold in Spring/Fall and we get a couple weeks in the summer where temps can get to the high 90s.

I do my own oil changes. Its not hard once you've done one or two. I recommend an open-top receptacle for the thermostat drain, as the oil doesn't run out, it gushes. (I use a 5 gallon bucket, with one side cut away that matches the shape of the edge of the car - a curve) It keeps the splashing to a minimum.

The only down side is that it takes a full case of Brad Penn each time, (nearly) and that adds up. There are other tips and tricks, so take a look around.

**I thought I'd better thread-jack this back to the original topic. It's ALMOST a "What oil?" thread...

So if you have to start up your motor and its down to -22f
it will be ok .

But if it is -22f ,
you should be somewhere else , imho .
