Default First Mile

I just test drove a 997 today (in fact a 6spd and PDK). I was at the local dealer for a PCA service clinic and set up a test drive using a promotion I found on the Porsche website.

http://www.porschedealer.com/firstmile20/

It was my first time driving a current model 911. Wow..what a car? It's smooth and fast and sounds great. In about 20 more years I'll probably be able to afford one. So in the mean time, I will enjoy my 964.

I'm a fan of the first gen 997.

No hate here.

Flame suit on. The new cars do just about everything better, better brakes, better shifting, more power, better economy, real ac, etc. They just don't feel right. Too numb, too heavy, too many fru-fru add ons. I love the first gen gt-3's, the first gen 997's are a lot of fun, and a well set up Boxster S can be a great car. But, give me a 964 or a 993, I will be much happier.

... they also have cup holders, better A/C, navigation systems, are bigger. more comfortable and quieter inside and are much easier to drive fast (especially on the track). However, when it comes to the "fun factor", I feel that the 964 beats them in many ways. My point is that even a 16 year old Porsche can get your heart racing and I feel very fortunate to own one - call me crazy. The are all great cars.

I'd love to be in your position Frank. looks like you have a 964s and 997 in your stable.

We don't HATE the current cars. We, well me specifically, HATE that they are not repairable; and that the engine replacement rate is quite astonishing. (I know, I know, save the air cooled based engines.)

In any case, I'm quite fond of the 956 water cooled engine!

Curious, did the dealer give you the sales pitch after/during the drive? I would love to compare the 964 to the 997. I wonder if being 28 would be a deterent for them not to offer a test drive to me?

The 997 is an amazing piece in the lineage of Porsche. If we could, wouldn't we have one of every Porsche in the line up?

I am not sure about the 997 having never driven one. But being somewhat financially shrewed, the math does not add up. I do not see how a 997 could touch the smiles per dollar of a 964. The 997 is a great car, but +3X better than a 964 is a tough sell.

Sadly, it doesn't quite work for me. Sure, I'd like one in addition to my 964 but the classic Porsche shape that was on my wall growing-up is just not realized fully enough in the 997. Some of them with full body kits even look ugly, an almost impossible feat for a 911 of any vintage. My car looks, feels and smells like the car I spent decades dreaming about.

I never got a sales pitch. Partially because I was talking to the sales guy during the Service Clinic about the cars he's owned etc.

My buddy signed up for this promotion on line and he did not get a run-around during or after the drive. He showed up in an Audi too.

Besides since you already have a Porsche...just show up in yours and surley they shouldn't be worried about your age.

Definatly give it a go. It'll be worth it.
