"Stars" or * in Engine Serial Number?
Hi - I'm looking at buying my first 911 - a 964 C2.
It's a 1991 with the Engine number of *62M 00551* where the *'s are actually more of a star shape.
While I know this is one of the notorious "gasketless" engines, I'm okay with that. But I'd love to know what the stars mean. Perhaps that it's been rebuilt under warrenty with a gasket installed??? : )
Anyway - any info would be appreciated. Can't find anything here, online in general or in Adrian's book.
Thanks, hoping to join the ranks soon.

Congrats for looking, 964s rock.
The stars are just Porsche's way of marking some of the later aircooled engines, so it doesn't signify any particular modification or repair. Not sure if the watercooled engines still have these same markings, but the 964 blocks all have them (in fact I'd be worried if they were missing).
Stating the obvious, but do a Carfax check and general inspection of the car before you take the plunge.
Good luck!

Thanks - okay - good to know they don't really mean anything. Perhaps thier "book-ends" to avoid any modifications to the number by adding digits?
Carfax is clear, PPI due with a local, deeply knowledgable 991 shop on Tuesday - fingers are crossed.
