So I think I overfilled my oil. After a drive, I was looking at the wrong gauge, saw the needle was low, and added in about 1/2-3/4 of a quart. That's when I realized I was looking at the wrong gauge, and the correct one had the needle at the top of the range (but not at the very top).

So to be safe, I'd like to extract some oil out of it, and bought one of those manual extractor pumps. I got the hose in pretty far, but nothing is coming out. A couple of questions for those in the know:
1) Since it's not coming out when the car is off/cold, I'm assuming it needs to be on?
2) Does it have to be warmed up to work? I did quickly turned it on for a couple of minutes, tried to pump, but still nothing. Not sure if it's safe to let it warm up, or perhaps even go for a drive.

You can remove excess oil at the drain plug. Wear gloves and have a container ready and whatever you do, don't drop the drain plug.
Unthread the plug all the way but hold it up against the engine and then tilt it sideways so you can meter the flow. I have done this and it works quite well.

I have pulled oil out of the dip stick tube with an extractor and yes oil needs to be warm for an easy pull.

Large suction syringe with extension tubing through the oil filler console in the engine bay for me. Lay down a towel for drips, easy peasy and no need to deal with the drain plugs. Amazon for < $10 if I remember.
