Would appreciate some feedback from anyone in the Westmont, Illinois area. I hate to impose, but there is a red 91 911 at Napleton Porsche that looks like a good buy, but would like to hear from someone who knows these cars and the dealership reputation.
From the pics...it looks pretty nice. I would say that finding a 964 for sale at a Porsche dealer could be a good thing. They may have tried to replace this or that to get it ready for sale.
With that said, it could be unlikely that it comes with any records. Run a Carfax and see where it came from. I would think that with a car that old, its probably a trade it.
Just in case you didn't know, this car is on Ebay now. Don't remember how much time is left. I would have taken a look at it, but it is a C2 and I need a C4.
Good luck.
That does not look like a DE car, but then why do the Chrome 16" wheels have Pilot Sport CUP tires? In Chicago? I have a set of those for the track and can tell you that they are like hockey pucks below 60 degrees F. Not a wise choice in tires and would lead me to ask a lot of questions about this car. What state of mind was the Previous Owner in or were these tires just thrown on to get rid of the car.
I have seen the vehicle history report and all looks good, plus before ebay I spoke to a salesman about it, who advised that I can get an inspection done but that the car was in great shape and it was a trade-in. Given that the dealership has been around for years, I am somewhat optimistic, although it is a buy as is. I do not like the wheels and was initially a turn-off, but the mileage and the interior has me bidding.
Thanks for the ideas.
I am really optimistic about this one for exactly the reasons you have stated. I hope you can get a 'lister to go throw their eyes over it for you. Have you tried finding a local person from the other boards? A 993 owner would be able to give just as good impressions imo.
PS. OT but is your screen name based on the 50's books by W.E. Johns? My Dad kept his from childhood and used to read them to me when I was a lad...great memories!
You are right about the name, I read so many as a boy in the 70's that my school mates started calling me biggles; great books for young readers. I will certainly try the 993 guys.

The car shows up in Carfax with a Branded Title, for Not Actual Mileage. Explanation is, back in 1996, it was tagged like this:
" NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE TITLE ISSUED - CARFAX Advisor™
A NAM title is issued when the owner discloses to a DMV mileage fraud, a broken odometer or that the actual mileage of this vehicle is unknown.
Mileage reported after this reading is potentially unreliable. "
But by the history, the problem (broken odometer maybe?) was quickly fixed and the mileage pattern going forward looks legit. So it kinda has a cloud over it.
Having said that, I can tell you that I bought my '91 three years ago from a different Porsche dealer in Chicago off Autotrader. It was a trade-in from a long-time customer, and after looking at the service records, I rolled the dice and bought it without a PPI. It's been one of the best used cars I've ever owned. Other than oil changes and other routine fluid changes, all I've had to ever had to do to it is replace the ignition switch and charge the A/C. It runs great, passed the paint-meter test as all original, came bone stock down to the D90's and I've left it that way. If you can get past the title thing (and if I were buying it as a "keeper", it woudln't bother me), I wouldn't hesitate to go for it.
Good luck!
ps
I case you're wondering, I've often found problems in Autocheck that don't show in Carfax, or vice-versa. I've bought a lot of used cars for myself and family, and before I get really serious about a car, I run it through both.
Thanks very much for the feedback. There is actually a vehicle history from Auto Check, an Experian Co attached with the ebay ad, but it does not show any title defects. I should be getting some feedback from a lister some time later. I would not mind taking a chance with the car, because there are certain implied warranties regardless if it says "as is" when buying from a merchant. I am glad to hear that your experience was good.

Yes, and I bought mine long-distance, similar to your situation. It's not like I trust car dealers much, but I tend to think that there's not much upside for a Porsche dealer to keep and try to sell a problematic trade-in. It could just end up being a PITA for them. So my thinking is, they must be fairly confident in this car itself.
Again, I would not let that particular Carfax issue stop you. The only problem would be, if you try to sell it in the future, a potential buyer could take issue with it. But it is easily explained, I think.
FYI...
I called about this particular car yesterday and spoke with a salesman named Mark who told the following when asked specifics:
They do not know anything about the previous owner or have any info on the car's maintanence history. Car does not appear to have any body/paint work but he could not be sure. Car drives fine but shifter "vibrates" in 1st gear. A/C compressor engages but it doesn't blow very cold. Tires need replacing and it has "normal" leaks for a 964 but runs "smooth".
Other than that just the normal sales jargon although he seemed pretty open about the car.
I decided not to pursue the car based mainly on the mileage discrepency but the shifter thing also concerned me.
After lurking around here for a long time I'm currently... FINALLY! shopping for my first P-car, a 964 or 993, and know that there is no such thing as too much info when buying one of these beasts.
Tobe,
Thanks for the feedback, I also talked to a salesman there and he seemed forthcoming, but I should have some first hand knowledge by Monday, so will see where it goes from there.
