Default Expected repair costs

While on the track with my 92 C2 coupe, I suddenly experienced a loss of power and a loud noise eminating from the engine. Drove under 2500 rpms to the pits. A few individuals far more knowledgeable than me thought is was a blown head gasket. In any event, one cylinder is losing compression for certain. The consensus is it will need a top end rebuild. What can I expect as an average cost range for such work, if in fact that is the problem? Not being too mechanically inclined, just want to get some expert opinions.

With only 70K miles, I was not expecting to have to do a rebuild until well above 100K miles. Have any of you had this low milege failure?

Thanks and best wishes for a happy New Year.

If a valve struck a piston and punched a hole then its rebuild time. around 15K for a race prepped stock engine. Cheaper if totally stock and you can reuse some stock parts like rods etc... If a hard strike then the bottom end must be checked.
