Default 964 6 Speed Conversion??

Hey guys,
I know everyone has seen me posting these cars up since I joined the forum, but since I can't read German---I cant tell what is going on here.

It appears that they have done a 6 speed conversion on the car, I know they are all built ground up, but you guys have a look see and tell me what you think.....I like it either way

I can't tell by the photograph if the trans is a 6spd or not. Either way, a 6spd bolts directly into the 964 chassis.

A 6-speed is a nice upgrade for a track car. I have a G50/32 in my car now. It took a little bit of work to get it mounted well due to the differences in the nose piece, but was not too much effort (for the shop). If you are going to run any enduros, a transmission cooler is a nice add-on to protect your investment (for a 6- or a 5-speed).

If my tranny ever went, I would def do the swap---is it possible to just use the boot, shift **** that they did there, or can that only be used with the 6 speed tranny

The **** is pressure fit on the shift lever so no problem in using the other other one. As for the boot, you might have to reuse your metal ring from your old boot in order to make the new boot hold in the center console. Very easy to recuperate the ring, I did it with my momo universal suede boot.

the pictures are from ap-cer-design.de
they can rebuild you gearbox from 5 to 6 speed.

it will cost around the 9000,-$$

it is maybay less expensive to ask a local or nearby ruf center what the cost is there, im not sure it is also availeble voor a C4

ok, so stupid question ...... besides another dear (I'm guessing lower RPM at cruise) what's the benefit of a 6 speed over a 5?

I thought that the 6 speed box is better suited to the torque of the 993 engine than the 964 and that putting it in the 964 is not necessarily any better than the 5 speed?

What you really need is a Euro geared 993 close ratio 6 speed box, i.e. G50/21 with LSD. It's great to drive as you're always in the right gear. THe US 993 6 speed gear ratios are too long.

Its not really about having another gear, it is about having the "right" gears for your engine. The standard US 6 speed is not really a performance benefit over the 5spd since 5th gear is about the same as the 5th gear in the 5 speed.

Hi there ,
great info Bill , I am still not convinced of the difference that could make a good close ratio 5 to an RS or Cup 6 , maybe with a sequential shift ? but on a short circuit ?? maybe Quaife can provide a good close ratio set for a 5 speed ?

There's no doubt that a sequential would be quicker, but most of us live in the real world of cost constraints.

The thing to look at is the speed in gears and the splits or rpm drops between gears. Then choose what's most appropriate for your use. For my street car i want a tall top and will live w/ bigger drops to get it. For my track car(which is also occasionally street driven) I want a lower top end and smaller splits, I'll live w/ the commotion at cruise to get it.

The 6spd just allows somewhat more flexibility at the cost of some weight, you can still gear for whatever use you intend and are certainly not limited to factory choices though they are some very good gides to what will work well.
