I think it is on the sticker on the underside of the luggage compartment lid. You should look for two letters. I think mine also has it on the underside of the front carpet as well.
As for translation - the two letters then link to a multitude of options. Main dealer query with your chassis number is probably your best option.

This was something i checked out some months ago out of interest. Unfortunately I was unable to identify all the codes, particularly the interior code, which in my case is 'SW'. Adrian's enthusiasts manual didn't list this code either. Two other codes I couldn't identify were 740 and 10011. I also used a web site where you just entered all your codes and it listed what they stood for, although this couldn't identify the three I've mentioned here. I'll post back with the link. It might help you.
And to confirm the ident label (as already mentioned) is under the bonnet and also a duplicate, stuck to the inside of the service book !

Shane, I have his original 964.... Problem is I am in FL and the book is in NJ... Someone here will help.
