Question Tie Rod Measurements?

Tomorrow I am going to take my steering guts apart in preparation for a new rack, tie rods etc...

What's your favorite/accurate measurement method for getting the new tie rods at least in the ballpark before an alignment? Do you measure leftover threads? OR measure the entire length from center to center? Is a tape measure accurate enough?

Measuring will only get you in the ballpark.
I used the distance between the two chamfers. Still had to set the toe afterward.
