I will be in Koln and Dusseldorf next week on business. I have a free day Saturday, November 22. It looks like it is near impossible to get a ride in the BMW taxi on short notice. http://bmw-motorsport.com/ms/ringtaxi.html
Is anyone available to meet me there so that I may at least get to experience a 964 (or any Porsche) on the 'ring? Of course, I will pay expenses +. https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/burnout.gif
PM is OK.
Best regards, Danz C4

Crashing is a relatively common outcome, if you risk the rental car, be careful. And you have to pay big time for any armco you have so much as kissed, and for recovery. A C class would still be fun of course, and I have been overtaken there in my 964 by a 4 cylinder diesel C class with wheel trims removed, and also given trouble by 2 x rental A class in convoy. Until I could get onto a straight.
I dont know of anyone going at that time. A pretty good chance of blagging a ride, though, especially if you pay the ticket.
Everyone can speak English.

I rented a race car and crashed it last time. Accidents happen there. Do not get a regular rental cars from Avis or Sixth. Insurance wont cover the damages happened on the ring.
Here's the story, http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=151381 Things could go a lot worst as it was at very high speed and there were bikes around (Yes, motocycles!).

Don't want to spoil your plans, but I'd be careful of simply joinng a driver that I don't know. The dangerous part about the Ring is that it is very narrow and the armco is very close at times. The motorcyclists are plain nuts (and fall off all the time), and the occasional tour bus (it's a public road!) becomes an interesting obstacle as well. I wouldn't risk it with the rental car as it is well known that the major rental car companies monitor the Ring and driving on it is specifically excluded in the rental agreement. There are some very nice spots to watch and I think you'll have fun, whether you get on it or not. Zakspeed used to run two Viper ring taxis as well, but I don't know whether they still do. The food, beer and wine are "not-bad" in that part of Germany... Actually everything is fantastic.
In Koeln make sure that you eat at Frueh Am Dom. The menu is different in the basement, so be sure to try both kitchens if you go more than once. The other Brau Houses are OK, but Frueh is the best. Peters has good food but the beer is not as good.
Have fun.

How was it? Let's just say that frozen rain and snow flakes pretty much closed down that opportunity. On the other hand, a drive on the autobahn is always entertaining. I can tell you that the rental Volvo V70 diesel station wagon with 5 people will cruise nicely at 210 kph. And, 210 kph is not nearly fast enough to stay in the fast lane very long. The big black Mercedes seem to own that lane, estimated moving closer to 250 kph.

I thought I would have the opportunity to drive the Autobahn tonight but my host took us on another route.
I've certainly learned to appreciate gluhwein while I've been here. Not much else to do in Detmold and I couldn't arrange a trip to the ring today. However, there will be at least one trip to the ring on another trip.
The nice thing is that my company has a fleet of company vehicles for management to use. I have a feeling one of those will see some action this spring....
