full fiberglass car
anyone know what the weight of a standard front quarter? Found a garage around here that can fabricate a full fiberglass 964 body for $3000. Will it be worth the weight saving? Is fiberglass much lighter and does it have any drawbacks?

All 911s are unibody designs, meaning that the frame and the body are one. The doors, front fenders, and deck lids are bolt-on, and there is some potential for weight savings in those pieces. Fiberglass is not nearly as stiff as steel, and flex under wind loads is an issue with fiberglass wings. The fiberglass can crack, and if the paint is not flexible, it will crack.
What parts are included in the "full fiberglass body"? If they scab on top of the existing parts like many "body kits", you will only add weight and wind drag.

The other thing is safety. If you look at a couple of the pictures in the recent threads about crashes. The front quarter panel absorbed most of the energy of the collisions. The factory lightweighted the hood, and glass, for racing, but kept the body panels, and actually welded then in place in more spots.

My $0.02 based on having a 993 RSR fiberglass body on my car for 3 years...
There is not as big a difference in weight as you might expect. I don't think the weight savings was more than 50 lbs for the quarter panels and bumper covers. The hood is a good area to save some weight by switching to fiberglass and leaving the rest of the body alone. Fiberglass panels are much more prone to paint problems than the stock panels. Mine started to look pretty bad up close within a year. Also the cost you quote isn't much better than what you can get them for from Getty Design. Be aware that while they might be able to make them, how they look and the problems with getting a good fit could be significant (compare the crappy parts that GT Racing sells versus the parts from MA Shaw or Getty).
