Spare Tire
I got a 90-964, and the spare tire is mounted on a 15" wheel. Over the course of its life, my 964 was eventually upgraded to 17" Cup wheels. After reading the owner manual, I understand that in the unfortunate event of a flat in the rear, I would need to mount a front wheel in the back and put the spare in the front...
Now, my spare is a 15", do I understand well by thinking that this wouldn't not work, and that I should look at a new spare in case of emergency?

The 16's had a larger sidewall (aspect ratio)... your overall tire diameter, 16 or 17, will be relatively the same.
You are talking about rim diameter... I am talking about overall tire diameter.
See the link below... This might help explain why going from a 16 to a 17 inch diamter rim does not affect overall tire diameter (if done correctly).

There are two different spares. One has round holes in the "spokes" and the other has triangular holes. I can't recall which was which, but I saw the post here. I don't have the reference in my notes, but I'll try and search later.

Too true. I carried a spare around for about a year before I realized it would no longer fit over my big reds. Good thing I never needed it. I sold the spare and bought two cans of Fix-a-Flat.

I have mentioned this before in response to another similar prior inquiry, but just a reminder, none the less. There is a true solution for getting your 16" space saver tire mounted on your front wheel when a larger brake/caliper package has been installed on a 964. The answer is a 1" bolt-on spacer. I run 332 mm front rotors (package came from Wrightwood Racing years ago) with big red calipers. Clearly the standard space saver will not fit. However, if you bolt up a 1" spacer then you can easily mount the space saver with plenty of clearance to spare. Been there, done that. I carry the 1" spacer with me all the time and it fits upside down nicely on top of my space saver spare into the bolt holes. Yes, you will probably need to buy some extra steel lug nuts to use to bolt up the spacer to the wheel hub.
