Default Starter motor - which one fits?

Q 4 those who know everything about 964s

I have a 1990 C4
Correct starter motor part No. is 964 604 104 00 and my starter is on the way out.
I have available a starter motor part No. 965 604 104 00 and PET tells me it is for the Turbo - but it looks the same - does anybody know what if any is the difference?

Thanks

It seem that part # 964 604 104 00 has been superseeded by part # 996 604 107 00.
I have no idea if the turbo starter will fit or not...

No clue, but the 965 got a special part number for a reason. The turbo engines have lower compresson ratio, and that might let them use a lighter starter the the NA engines. If the weight is identical, and the mounting and frame dimensions are also identical, I would install it.

The lower compression idea is a possible -- and with that thought perhaps it's more a case of the 964 having 11 to 1 compression ration so the starter is a heavier duty build than the turbo build which may be "standard" -- interesting thought.
Anyway - the plan is to get the 965 604 104 00 starter checked over by a good electrical engineering shop that specialise in that sort of work - and we have such a shop locally -- and then to do a changeover - when I have the two out it will be "on the scale time" and "close examine time" - and I will report back - but it may be a few weeks away -- I am looking forward to this because nothing seems to really go wrong with my car - just routine maintenance on the usual service items - but that's probably got a lot to do with no traffic and open road driving.

Seek, and you shall find...

ie, do a search and you'll find Jason's nicely detailed explanation.
(It's part of Hawk's bigger thread on this irksome topic..)

Definitely one to review as you dig into that pita.

(And, yes, the 965 604 104 00 should work for you. It's the wiring pole positions that were changed. Nothing more, I believe. well... not much more.)
Good luck.

Thanks for the info - just shows again that a search would have found it.

So I may have a reco starter available for changeover in Australia -- we will see what happens.

Thanks again -- problen/question solved
