Default Rusty A/C Pulley

I've had my A/C belt off for a while and the pulley has gathered a light covering of rust.

I'm getting ready to re-install the belt and charge the A/C system. Shoud I:
  • Ignore the rust, mount the belt and look forward to cool driving in warm weather
  • Remove the rust so that it doesn't damage the new belt

If removing the rust is appropriate, how should I go about doing that?

Thanks,
Dave
