Default 964 SUV - who needs a Cayenne?

Besides driving my 964, I also love cycling, and it has been a dilemma since I moved from 944's that there is no way to transport a bike in a 911 without completely disassembling it, and that is not a practical option. Our Volvo XC90 has bike racks and serves to carry my wife's and my bikes to our rides most of the time, but every once in a while she needs the Volvo for something else when I want to go for a ride. She has never driven the 964 (her choice, but by and large, its OK with me ,) and then I have a transportation issue. I had heard about the bike carriers that mount unobtrusively on a 911, and they have been mentioned on this forum occasionally, usually with some derision from the purists. (I am a purist, too, until pragmatism overrules.) A few weeks ago I spotted one for sale on the local Craigslists for $50 and decided it would be worth a try. I have used it a couple of times now and am very happy with the versatility it has added to my car, without visible modifications or inconvenience when not in use. See the photos below with the bike mounted, as well as the small receiver that sits below the license plate when the carrier is stored. Inexpensive wheel bags from Performance Bikes keep the wheels safe inside the car without getting grease on the upholstery.
For those who may be interested in this device (there is also a ski-rack attachment) the manufacturer's web site is at http://www.bdiracks.com/bdiplate.html
(No affiliations, yada, yada -- I bought mine on Craigslist, remember?)
The 964's plastic skin over the metal bumper makes it a little more complicated, but I'll be glad to share how I mounted mine solidly to the car.

Wink

As a Performance Driving School classmate of yours -- and knowing how you make that C4 scoot -- I'd say there's been no compromise to your car's name with that little bob-tail, Ian.

When rack's off, probably weighs less than the secondary muffler.

Would you also post a picture, please, of the underside pick up points! Curiosity has me tonight.

Hi Lonnie, nice to hear from you!
The photos below show the components of the carrier system. The only part that remains on the car is the backing plate which is bolted to the bumper beam and then covered by the license plate. It weighs less that 2 lbs.

Thanks! Quite cool, that. (And far less than our secondary muffler/'ballast'.)
