964 SUV - who needs a Cayenne?
,) and then I have a transportation issue. I had heard about the bike carriers that mount unobtrusively on a 911, and they have been mentioned on this forum occasionally, usually with some derision from the purists. (I am a purist, too, until pragmatism overrules.) A few weeks ago I spotted one for sale on the local Craigslists for $50 and decided it would be worth a try. I have used it a couple of times now and am very happy with the versatility it has added to my car, without visible modifications or inconvenience when not in use. See the photos below with the bike mounted, as well as the small receiver that sits below the license plate when the carrier is stored. Inexpensive wheel bags from Performance Bikes keep the wheels safe inside the car without getting grease on the upholstery. For those who may be interested in this device (there is also a ski-rack attachment) the manufacturer's web site is at http://www.bdiracks.com/bdiplate.html
(No affiliations, yada, yada -- I bought mine on Craigslist, remember?)
The 964's plastic skin over the metal bumper makes it a little more complicated, but I'll be glad to share how I mounted mine solidly to the car.
When rack's off, probably weighs less than the secondary muffler.
Would you also post a picture, please, of the underside pick up points! Curiosity has me tonight.
The photos below show the components of the carrier system. The only part that remains on the car is the backing plate which is bolted to the bumper beam and then covered by the license plate. It weighs less that 2 lbs.
sorry for the thread jacking, but i'm thinking of getting bellow trailer... and this plate is perfect for it!
