Default were 17" Turbo Wheels a standard option on a 1992 c2

I was curious because i see that a lot of the 964's (1992 c2) had 16" wheels and I was wondering if you need to make any modifications for 17" wheels? I saw an ad for a c2 with 17" Turbo Wheels and was wondering if that was an option that was purchased when the car was new.

I think it's a common upgrade people do. Mine has 17" 993 Targa wheels.

The window sticker on my '93 noted the 17" (Cup I's) as an option.

(I forget whether the price next to it is 'trivial' or eye-opening.)

The short answer as far as I know is no. An upgrade to 17" wheels is supposed to be accompanied by a change of a steering stop to prevent rubbing. Turbo or Technology wheels were not made in 17" by Porsche. What you are seeing is a replica wheel. There is a twist style that is 17" but they are Boxter/996 wheels and are of a completely different style than the turbo wheels. There is nothing wrong with replicas but these were never an option for the 964 at least as far as the information available to me would indicate.

not the "twist" wheels. As pointed out, they came much later than the 964 series.

My 93 c2 came with 16" original cups as standard. I replaced with the 996 genuine Porsche wheel (part no's 996.362.124.00 and 996.362.128.00). Straight swap, no spacers, no rubbing! even on full lock.

The 16 inch "Design 90" wheels were standard equipment on '89, '90 and '91 normally aspirated 964s. Standard equipment on '92, 93 and '94 normally aspirated 964s was 16 inch "Design 92" wheels, which are basically a 16 inch thinner-spoke version of the 17 inch "Turbo Cup" or "Cup 1" wheels. The Turbo Cup wheels were introduced with the 1991 964 Turbo and were an option on '91, '92, '93 and '94 normally aspirated 964s. They were standard equipment on the 964 RS (Euro), the RS America, the (US) 964 Cup Cars, (US) 964 America Roadster, the 964 Speedster, and the '94 widebody C4 coupes (both the US and ROW "Anniversary" versions).

A lot of 964s were upgraded from D90s or D92s to Turbo Cups when nearly new and, since the replica Turbo Cup wheels came out ten years ago or so, the trend has magnified.

My 1993 964 C2 came with 17 Cup 1 wheels, according to the user manual they where an option at that time with 16 inches wheels being the standard equipment

My first reply was not entirely correct after looking at the add, my appologies. The wheels actually in question were available from the factory in 17"(Cup 1). I was reffering to the Turbo Twist style found on the 993 turbo. Even with the Cup 1 wheels there are replicas on the market. These wheels do look great on the 964s.

In 1992 these wheels where the standard turbo wheels so could be described as such. But Porsche used the name "Cup Design"

To put the record straight. The 1991 & 1992 turbo came with design 91 or cup 1 wheels in 7 and 9" size. In 1993 the RSA came with Cup 1's in 7 & 8" size standard and were offered as an option on the C2. The 7 & 9" turbo size was never offered as an option from the factory although it is the more common upgrade since the 8's are hard to come by.
