Steering Wheel Removal on a 912
Hi Everyone
This post is almost a copy from the original in the 912 forum section but it has been posted up for a couple of days now and im getting pretty desperate, so i hope you guys may have some experiance with the problem i have.
I have a friend who has a 912 i think its around 1974 age and the steering wheel is slightly off centre, he came down to my garage for me to straighten it but i didnt want to damage the horn centre by force or try a remove the centre piece which appears to be stuck into the centre of the steering wheel so i wonder if you guys could tell me how to remove the steering wheel please.
I did a search like i always do but couldn't find anything relating to my problem.
P.S. I did a clutch on a friends 964 C4 the weekend and turned out it was easier than my C2 tiptronic. It does however help with a 2 post ramp and all the tools, but even so i should point out that it is possible to do the clutch without removing the engine on a C4.
Cheers
Jeff

A picture would help to see exactly which wheel is in that car. In any case, search the 356 forum. I think those steering wheels are similar. In my 356, you have to push on and twist the center piece. It is held on with tabs that are very difficult to move.
Good luck.

My 70 911 T had the push and twist horn (just get the battery disconnected first!). That is probably not the right way to fix it. The tie rod ends were probably replaced, and the alignment shop did not center the wheel when they did the final adjustment. Find a good alignment shop, and they will by properly adjusting the tie rods. Move the wheel, and you have a semi-permanent off-set in the steering.

If it's a 912, I believe it would be 1964-1969. You may not have to remove the steering wheel. You can check behind the floor board to see if you have a splined coupler on the steering shaft. Get the wheels pointed straight ahead, loosen the nut or nuts on the coupler, slide the shaft up and move the appropriate # of splines in the direction you need to center the steering. I've done this on my 964 when replacing the steering rack.
