Default Front Rotor Removal

I'm changing out my front rotors and am having trouble getting the rotor off.

The retaining screws are off.
The caliper is off.
I've put some liquid wrench on it.

Two questions:
  1. Anyone know what the threads are for the alternate holes that look like they are used to drive the rotor off?
  2. Anyone have any tips on how to pop that rotor off?

Thanks,
Dave

I've located the reference for the threads of the holes to drive the rotor off -- 8 mm -- I'm going try and locate some suitable bolts.

Hammer (the one from Ace Hardware, not Bosch) did it for me. Hit it on the edges, it will come off.

I think a simple trip to Lowes/HomeDepot/AutoZone/PepBoys will nicely fulfill your 8mm needs. Did for me. (And fwiw, 8 sounds right.)

Smack the edge of the disc with a rubber mallet if your not re-using the discs.

I tried a rubber mallet.

In the end I purchased a pair of M8 bolts with standard threads and wrenched them off. Worked like a charm. Given the forces required it would have been a long hard slog without the bolts!

New rotors, pads (and spiders this time). Hopefully, these OE rotors (marked made in Germany) will last longer and rust less than the after market drilled ones I've removed.

Paint the hats. (else, they'll rust plenty.)

I was going to do that, but these OE rotors arrived with the hats already painted.

Should I paint over what's there? It is a very light grey color. I figured it was rust protection; no?

I did, in black heat paint but imo it looks cr4p. Couldn't get decent coverage as the paint was so thin. Even with multiple coats.

Leave 'em grey.

If you are installing Porsche rotors, they indeed have a very thin primer coat. I replaced my brakes (rotors/spiders/sensors/pads) last year and decided to paint the rotor hats and circumference before installing. I used a high temp primer and a high temp silver and to this day, all four rotors still look the same. You can mask a large portion of the swept area and then allow the first brake application to clean the rest of the paint off.

I'm wondering the same thing. Why would you have to be replacing rotors if the car has never been driven?
