Default Cooling fan to blower duct?

I got the dreaded failure of the cooling duct rubber shroud today... found about a 2" hole and related cracks all of a sudden. (This is the rubber/plastic piece that is at the top of the main cooling fan, connecting to the aux blower assembly...)

What causes a rubber piece to appear to shatter? Wierd. I have it taped together with Gorilla tape. It will be an interesting test to see if it lasts more than 10 mins...

Where do I find one? Pelican only lists a 993 version, (which looks different to me? is it?) and I don't see one at other online vendors...

Is this a Sunset part? I was just there today too.. dumb...

Should I be worried about the chunk of rubber missing? Did it go down into the engine? Is that a vacuum there or a positive pressure? Did the missing part blow out? Or get sucked into somewhere?

TIA!

The part number is 964.106.403.02 - here on Pelican.

I've had the same problem - it's pretty common I believe - and AFAIK, any bits coming adrift are likely to be sucked into the rear blower and potentially passed on through the plenum into the heat exchangers. I suspect that they won't last too long in there and will eventually just crumble into dust.

Changing it is pretty easy - it's just 3 bolts - although getting the new one in can be difficult. Apparently locating the left hand end over the blower inlet first helps.

Regards

Dave

The Pelican price is about right. I priced them at $40 over at Tischer Porsche (getporscheparts.com).

I can't speak to where the broken bit went, but Dave's logic sounds good to me. I presume they break down because of all the heat cycles. Heat is hard on rubber bits and, frankly, I am surprised that as much of the rubber bits hold up on our cars as well as they do. I think the piece was designed to have some flex in it and over time it gets brittle and cracks with engine vibrations.

Mine was deteriorated when I bought m car. At first I thought that pieces would drop down or get sucked in somewhere. But after losing a larger hunk of rubber I found it in the engine compartment. It blew out. So I thought about it and it made sense. That area is on the positive pressure side of the fan so it swells and blows outward after it cracks. I replaced mine with one from Parts Heaven and if memory serves correctly with tax and shipping it did'nt come out to more than $30

i know this is an old topic but does anyone have any tips on how to fit a new air duct?
I am having a real hard time to get the rubber part to fit over the lip of of the aux blower assembly.

As in many matters, a tiny bit of lubrication helps. Silicone spray or something.

WD40 might be better. Silicone isnt good anywhere near O2 sensors not that you are near it but with my luck sometimes.....
