The Evolution of a Jackstand
I have wanted a set of 4 flattop jackstands for a while, but could not justify the cost, so here is my own version of the flattop jackstand. I bought 4 stands at Canadian Tire and modified them as the pictures show, total cost to me for all 4, about $ 85.

I made the flattop from a piece of stainless pipe, welded it to some stainless plate , then I machined it to the shape you see in the pictures. The stud is threaded in with loctite. I also machined the rack to a good tight fit inside the pipe Steen

Thanks for all the kind words, wish I could build a set for all of you, but I am afraid this is just a one of. That said, it should be fairly easy to dublicate the flattop piece. I also got 4 hockey pucks that I drilled a 1/2" hole through, that way they can be fitted in case I do not want the center stud sticking out.

For those of us with no welding talent here's another solution. I just pulled out the ugly cast iron part and replaced it with a standard rubber jack pad. It means the height isn't adjustable but adequate for most wheel/suspension work.

I just bought two sets of these as they have a "flatter" surface than traditional "V" style ratchet jack stands and base will not damage your garage floor (if epoxy coated or like...)
